What is healthy ageing and how to achieve it?

Healthy ageing means the process of ageing well and maintaining your physical and functional health.

The factors that help you age well include being independent, having social relationships, being able to enjoy life, staying productive or volunteering, having a purpose or passion, emotional support and how well you cope with difficulties.

It is important to understand the factors that help you to age well because you can actively add years to your life or increase your quality of life.

National Seniors Australia has provided some great tips to help you age well:

Maintain physical activity: Try to do at least 30 minutes of moderate activity each day. Work different muscles in your body by doing different types of exercises.

Maintain your balance: You need to maintain you balance to reduce your risk of falls. If you have concerns about your balance speak to your doctor to address any issues.

Smoking and alcohol use: Smoking dramatically speeds up the ageing process and will cause a number of related health problems. Drink alcohol in moderation by keeping to the rule of two standards drinks or less.

Maintain a balanced diet: Eat at least three meals each day, drink lots of water and eat a variety of healthy foods. You can speak with your doctor about how to create a healthy eating plan.

Keep your brain active: Make sure you exercise your mind by taking on challenges and doing mental activities. Do a puzzle or a crossword, learn to play a musical instrument or learn a new language.

Social connections: Spend time with your family and friends and maintain your social relationships with them. Get involved in a group or organisation to make new relationships with other people. By spending time socialising with other people, you can greatly boost your wellbeing and happiness.

Maintain a positive attitude: Keep an open mind and a positive attitude towards life and try to look on the bright side of a negative issue. This will help you to cope effectively with difficult situations.

Then you can use the internet and family history websites to research your family tree and discover past family members you never knew existed.

There are many family history websites that have collected an enormous database of records on birth, death and marriages, Australian censuses, military records, electoral roles and more. These websites allow you to find the missing links in your family tree by conducting automated searches through these records.

These websites are a great way to organise and preserve your family history to pass along to the next generation and keep your history alive.

Researching your family history also provides the perfect opportunity to connect with your loved ones over a discussion about your family tree. 

Ancestry.com.au is the world’s largest online family history resource with billions of genealogical records in their database.

How to use Ancestry.com.au:

  1. Enter your details: Type in your name, birth date, where you were born and the same details for your parents. Your family tree will then be created and displayed on your computer screen.
  2. Ask your family members: Have a conversation with your loved ones to discover the details of previous members of your family. You can then enter their details into your family tree.
  3. The website will help you find family members: When your tree is created you will see a leaf symbol next to a person’s name. This symbol provides a hint to a possible family member discovered by the website database. You can click on the hint and add the person if they belong to your family.
  4. Decorate your tree: You can upload photos to your tree, attach historical records and record audio.
  5. Involve your family: You can send email invitations to your family members asking them to view your tree. Your family members can add any missing information, which will help you to grow your tree faster.

How to help your loved one through a traumatic experience

If your loved one has experienced a traumatic or painful event they can suffer from the side effects for a long time.

Traumatic events are usually a frightening or distressing experience that can leave the person feeling numb or disconnected.

As a carer, it’s natural to want to help your loved one feel better and to assist them through this difficult time. You can’t take their pain away but you can help them to accept what has happened by providing essential support and advice.

Better Health Channel has provided some tips on how you can support your loved one:

  • Tell them you are sorry about what has happened and make it clear that you want to help them get through it.
  • Spend time with your loved one and keep them company.
  • Your loved one may experience emotional outbursts, which is a common side effect of a traumatic experience. Don’t take their outbursts to heart because they usually don’t mean what they say or do.
  • Offer practical support such as cooking dinner or going grocery shopping for them.
  • Help them return to their normal routine (when they are ready).
  • Talk about what happened and listen to them.
  • Try not to get upset.
  • Be patient and don’t pressure them to talk about the event if they are not ready.
  • Help them to relax and have fun again.
  • Help your loved one participate in physical activity, such as walking in the park. Exercise can help take their mind off the experience and help them to get a better night’s sleep.
  • Find appropriate ways to help them laugh.

Here are some reactions to avoid when helping your loved one through a traumatic experience:

  • Don’t ignore the event and don’t avoid talking about it.
  • Don’t judge their feelings or thoughts.
  • Don’t be impatient and expect them to get over the event quickly.
  • Don’t insist they need professional help straight away – not everyone who has experienced a traumatic event needs professional treatment. Give them time to deal with the trauma themselves but if you feel like things just aren’t getting better after a few days or weeks then consult a professional.

Your loved one may take a long time to recover from a traumatic event, but by supporting them and listening you can help them through the recovery process.

Are you at risk of Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition where your body is unable to produce or respond to insulin resulting in high blood sugar levels. Insulin is a hormone that allows the sugar in your blood to enter the cells of your body to be used for energy.

Without this hormone your body does not receive enough sugar which can result in hypoglycaemic shock, however, too much of this hormone means your body absorbs too much sugar which can produce the same reaction.

There are two types of diabetes; type one diabetes is usually diagnosed during childhood while type two diabetes is diagnosed in adults. If you are over the age of 45 then you could be at risk of developing type two diabetes. 

MyDr has provided some helpful tips on the risk factors and symptoms of diabetes.

Diabetes can occur if you are:

  • Over 45 years old and have high blood pressure
  • Over 45 years old and are overweight
  • Over 45 and have one or more family members with diabetes
  • Over 55 years old
  • Have heart disease
  • Have had a heart attack in the past
  • Have had high blood sugar levels during pregnancy

Some symptoms of type two diabetes:

  • Excessive urination
  • Feeling thirsty all the time
  • Tired and lethargic

These symptoms are difficult to detect in elderly people because they are often misinterpreted as normal signs of aging. This means that many elderly people remain undiagnosed which can lead to serious health problems such as kidney damage, eye damage and increased risk of a stroke or heart attack.

However, if you have been diagnosed with diabetes you can manage your condition effectively by consulting with your doctor. You can also help manage your condition by not smoking, losing weight and maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine.

How to secure your home and ensure your personal safety

Home and personal security is an important part of creating a comfortable living situation and having peace of mind at any age. Many elderly people live alone or have limited mobility and can therefore be an easy target for burglaries.

However, most burglaries can be prevented by using a number of simple home and personal security measures.

The Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing has some great tips on how to secure your home and reduce your risk of burglary:

  • Use security deadlocks and grilles on doors and windows.
  • Always lock all outside doors and windows when you go out, even if it’s for 5 minutes.
  • Lock up parts of the house you can’t keep an eye on.
  • Prune bushes and trees that hide your home’s windows and doors.
  • Don’t hide extra keys in flowerpots or under mats.

Here are some basic safety tips for your personal security:

  • Always be aware of other people and your immediate surroundings.
  • Be aware of situations that could make you vulnerable to crime, such as laneways, back streets, and poorly lit parking lots.
  • Don’t carry large sums of money. Pay your bills by cheque, credit card or over the phone.
  • When you are banking always vary your routine.
  • If you carry a handbag, hold it under your arm or in front of you and never leave it unattended.

You should always stay up to date on any security issues in your neighbourhood and if a crime does occur contact your local police station.

Understanding your hearing test

The Audiologist
An audiologist is a healthcare professional who is trained to identify and measure hearing impairments and related disorders. The audiologist will test your hearing in a number of different ways to determine where the hearing problem is located. At the end of your hearing test they will explain and interpret the results for you.

Your History
The audiologist will ask you some questions about your medical history to help them determine the best way to assist you with your hearing loss. They may ask you if any physical damage has ever occurred to your ears, if you have had past illnesses or if you have been exposed to damaging levels of noise.

The pure tone tests
The pure tone test helps the audiologist determine the degree at which you can hear different frequencies. For this test you will be required to sit in a quiet room with a set of headphones over your ears or with earplugs inserted into your ears. The audiologist will play a series of “pure tones” that vary in tone and volume. You will then be asked to raise your hand or push a button if you hear the tone.

Speech tests
For the speech test you will be required to sit in a quiet room and listen to a series of words. The words should have two syllables and will become quieter during the test. You will be required to repeat each word. This test allows the audiologist to determine the level at which you can detect and understand speech.

The audiologist may need to perform other tests on your ears to help them determine the extent of your hearing loss. At the end of all the tests your results will be displayed on a chart. The audiologist should then explain your results and what the next steps will be in treating your hearing. Remember don’t be afraid to ask questions or have them explain something you don’t understand.

Anybody can develop skin cancer but people aged 55 years and over are most at risk.

MamasHealth.com has provided an article on skin cancer and seniors including what to look for when checking your skin and what treatment doctors can provide.

What to look for:
All skin cancers could be cured if they were found and brought to a doctor’s attention before they had a chance to spread. It is vital that you check your skin regularly even if you don’t go out into the sun very much.

The most common symptom of a skin cancer is a change on the skin – especially a growth or sore that has not healed after two weeks. Not all skin cancers look the same.

Here are some examples of what a skin cancer may look like:

  • A small, smooth, shiny, pale or waxy lump.
  • A firm red lump.
  • A lump that bleeds or has developed a crust.
  • A freckle or mole that has begun to darken in colour or change in shape.
  • A flat red spot that is rough, dry or scaly.

Skin cancer treatments:
When a doctor treats a skin cancer their goal is to remove it or destroy the cancer completely. All treatments can be different depending on type, size, location and the person’s general health and medical history.

Treatments include:

  • Surgery where the cancer is removed from the body
  • Radiation therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • A combination of treatments

Encourage your loved one, and help them if required, to regularly check for skin cancers.

Social media is a great way for your loved one to stay in touch with you and it’s also a great way for them to get the support and information that they are looking for.

According to RegardingYourParents.com, many of the elderly today are computer savvy and if they aren’t they are willing to learn. Here are a couple of social media platforms that your loved one might be interested in joining:

Facebook: Keeps your loved one up to date with what is happening in their family and friends’ lives.

Skype: A fun and easy way for your loved one to have a face to face conversation with someone via their computer.

Twitter: Your loved one can use this to read up on small daily updates, talk about small things they are doing and give out and read up on small pieces of information.

Blogging: A great way for your loved one to talk about what is going on in their lives, use as a journal, list their opinions or simply vent – especially if they live alone and do not have anyone to talk to at home.

Contrary to popular belief asthma is not just a childhood disease. It has been known to develop for the first time later in life. It is believed that 30% of seniors have undiagnosed asthma as many elderly people tend to ignore the signs of breathing problems.

The Asthma Foundation has provided some tips about how to know if you have asthma and what to do if you are diagnosed.

How to know if you have asthma

Breathlessness, feeling like your chest is very tight, a dry continual cough and wheezing are the main symptoms of asthma. If you are experiencing any of these on a regular basis visit your doctor to be tested and diagnosed properly.

In Australia, 10% of adults are living with asthma. Some were diagnosed as children and others develop it later in life. Unfortunately, the older a person is, the higher the risk of asthma becoming fatal. It’s best to practice good asthma control.

Tips for seniors with asthma

  • Make sure you are using your inhaler correctly – ask your doctor to show you how.
  • Ask about your other medications as some, such as heart medication, may interfere with the way asthma medications or your lungs work.
  • Be sure to get regular exercise.
  • Visit your doctor regularly to maintain good asthma management.
  • Have an Asthma Action Plan.
  • Get you and your family to learn asthma first aid so if you need help they will be able to assist you. You will feel more comfortable knowing what to do as well.

Encouraging your loved one to communicate with their GP

Encouraging your loved one to talk to their doctor about their health is extremely important. Many people, especially seniors, may find it difficult to communicate with their doctor. But by asking questions, bringing up problems even if the doctor doesn't ask and letting the doctor know when a treatment isn't working, your loved one is taking an active role in their own health. 

HealthierYou.com shares some good communication topics you should encourage your loved one to talk about.

Sharing Symptoms:
It is important to be very clear and concise when explaining and describing symptoms. Although medical tests can determine what is wrong, it is your loved one’s symptoms that point the doctor in the right direction. Be sure to stress to your loved one that being concerned about symptoms is not a sign of weakness and it is definitely not complaining.

Learning more about medical tests:
If it has been decided that your loved one will need a medical test be sure they ask questions. Before the test encourage them to ask the doctor to explain why it is important, what it will cost, what the procedure is, how long the test will take and how long it will be before results are received.

When the results are ready, get your loved one to ask the doctor to explain what they are and what they mean. Also encourage them to ask for a copy and if the results are from a specialist, your loved one should ask them to send the results to their primary doctor.

Making the most of medications:
Sometimes medications can affect older people differently to younger people. Encourage your loved one to notify their doctor if their medication is not working for them and communicate exactly what the side effects are. Make sure your loved one doesn’t stop taking their medication without consulting their doctor first.
