There is a perception that migraines only really affect younger people – especially those in their teens and twenties - and therefore do not affect elderly people. However, studies have shown that although less common, those over the age of 60 suffer from migraines too.
World Headache Alliance has shared some helpful tips on how to help your loved one find relief from a migraine.
- Analgesics: paracetamol such as Panadol can be used for acute attacks.
- Aspirin and anti-inflammatory: Drugs such as ibuprofen and aspirin should be used with caution in elderly people.
- Opioids: Drugs such as codeine can cause drowsiness and disorientation, and should be taken with caution. Start doses at a low level and increase slowly – never go over the recommended dosage amount unless told otherwise by a doctor.
- Triptans: This prescription medication is an option, however be sure to send your loved one to the doctors to check for any heart conditions as the drug can affect the heart.
It is vital that if your loved one is suffering from acute headaches, they visit a doctor as soon as possible. Migraines can be caused by many different things that in turn can affect certain treatment choices.
Before buying any treatment consult a doctor and be sure your loved one understands the cause of their migraines. This will help them understand why some medications will work better for them than others.
